If your painting is not exactly as you hoped it would be, just keep practicing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the experience and process of painting and drawing that really counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"materials\"   class=\"wp-block-heading\">Materials<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Watercolor paper<\/strong>&nbsp; - I am using 140 lb. Strathmore Vision cold press watercolor paper cut down into a 4.5 x 6 inch piece. Feel free to work on larger paper if you like.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watercolor paint<\/strong> - tube watercolor paint on a pallet or a box kit of watercolor paints such as Crayola or Prang. Avoid cheap or off brand watercolor boxes because the colors will not be very vibrant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Watercolor brush<\/strong> - a soft round watercolor brush will work well. I am using a number 6. If you are working larger it will be easier to use a brush that is a little larger.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pencil<\/strong> - An H or Hb pencil is best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong> - A cup should do but if you will be doing a lot of painting and don\u2019t want to change the water as often, use a small bucket.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After using it for painting, I recommend not using a cup or bowl for food or drink again because heavy metals in the paint could leave traces. Guess what time of year it is? It's pumpkin time again. So in this art lesson we are going to paint an easy watercolor pumpkin step-by-step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use tube watercolor paints like the ones that I have here and that I keep in my palette and just reuse time after time or I can use a watercolor kit such as a Crayola or Prang kit that come with the little squares of color already ready for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you get started now is a really great time to add a few drops of water to each color that you're going to be using. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm going to start by sketching in the shape of my pumpkin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It's going to be an oval right in the middle followed by crescent shapes with rounded bulbs on each end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm going to keep my lines very light so that they don't show up later in my painting. I'm making my lines a little darker than I really should make them because I wanted you to be able to see them on the video so make sure to just keep your lines as light as you possibly can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm mixing together a little bit of ochre yellow with cadmium yellow to make a nice creamy buttery orange and I'm going to paint each rib section of my pumpkin separately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep my lines, keep my strokes really nice and loose and organic. After all, it's a pumpkin and it's going to be organic, organic in shape and not necessarily regular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure to leave a little sliver of white paper between each section of your pumpkin. This will keep the sections from blending together and having your color blur into to one kind of blur mess. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do get your sections blending together don't worry about it. Just go ahead and let it dry completely before you move on to using the next color. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see each section is separated by just a little sliver of white. And I left a white highlight right in the middle of that middle section, top middle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I'm going in, I have some cadmium red mixed with that ocher yellow color for a nice warm orange color. And so I'm going over each section again but concentrating on the outside and a little bit more at the bottom as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep adding water as you work, you don't want to get your colors too dense. Now, I'm going to rinse out my paintbrush and dab the excess on a paper towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I'm going to go back in and lift off some of the color and blend at the same time. So lift and blend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm kind of working on these highlights at the top of the pumpkin. And rinse out my paint brush as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you can really see the shape of the pumpkin start to take place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I'm going to blend out that color a little bit in the middle. Oops, a little bit too much moisture there, so I'm just going to dab it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now I have mixed together a little bit of my cadmium red with a burnt sienna brown, mixing it together and this is kind of a nice bright orange color. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I'm concentrating it kind of at the bottom for the for the low lights and again keeping each rib separate as I go along so that they don't bleed together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you're using watercolor paints you always work from light to dark so that's why I started with that light yellow color and I'm moving towards the darker colors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can build up the color little by little. And so I'm going in again and lifting and blending these layers of colors together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right, and so for a few shadows at the bottom I mix together a little bit of burnt umber and black and again keeping each rib section separate and and just going around the bottom and the sides of the rib section. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could also lift and blend these sections together although it seems like I already have quite a bit of water and color on my pumpkin, on my paper right now that I think that these are just going to kind of naturally blend out together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have mixed together a little bit of viridian green with some yellow and a little bit of black for the green I'm going to be using. I'm going to hit the middle of my stem just a little bit with that green and a little pumpkin leaf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we all know that pumpkin leaves are these big round kind of funny floppy things and if I drew them at the real size they would kind of overpower my little pumpkin so I'm just going to draw them little, kind of like they're in the distance or part of the background. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I wanted to I could add a little bit of vine and it can loop around, that's kind of fun. Now I'm going to add a little bit of black into my green to darken it and add a little bit of shadow to each leaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can even add a little bit of shadow where that vine overlaps if I wanted to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I'm going to hit the right side of my stem with that darker green color and rinse out my brush. And go back into my yellow mixture and do a nice little highlight on the front of each leaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add a little bit of yellow on the left side of the stem where the light is hitting it and blend it together with the green that is already there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, I take, I like to take a little bit of really watered down black paint and paint in a little shadow right underneath the base of my pumpkin. Being careful not to touch the rib sections otherwise the that paint will will blend together and bleed as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rinse out my brush again, get just a dab of water and blend that black out for a really nice smooth transition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That's it for this art lesson. If you sketch lightly enough you will probably not see your pencil lines after you paint over them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After you paint over the pencil you will not be able to erase the lines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Draw an oval shape for the center rib of the pumpkin. On both sides of the oval add in crescent shapes with rounded tops and bottoms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You could leave your pumpkin with three different rib sections or you could add several more. Sketch in an irregular stem at the top.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Paint the Pumpkin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I name the colors that I am using in this painting, but if you are using a watercolor box kit simply mix approximately similar colors or use what ever colors you prefer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Your goal should be to create a unique painting and enjoy the painting experience, no matter your skill level. So don\u2019t worry if it does not look exactly like mine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div water to each color that you plan to use, this will help them begin to soften up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mix yellow ocher and cadmium and paint each rib section of the pumpkin separately. Try to leave a little sliver of white paper between each section so the colors do not start to bleed together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the sections do start to bleed together, don\u2019t worry. Simply let your paint dry completely before making on to the next color.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave a roundish spot of white toward the top of the center rib for a highlight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next, mix cadmium red light with yellow ocher. Add the color to each section separately, concentrating on the outside part of each rib and the bottom of the pumpkin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then go back into the color that you just added and in small areas where the colors meet, lift the paint off&nbsp; just a little but and blend the colors together at the same time.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat the lifting the blending until you are happy with the effect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mix together burnt Sienna brown with cadmium red and paint into each section. Add this color mostly toward the bottom and up the edges just a little bit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This color is beginning to sculpt out the shadows. Rinse the brush and lift and blend the edges of the color just a bit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mix burnt umber brown with black and add just around the bottom part of the pumpkin and on the outside edge of each rib.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019d like you can lift and blend with your brush. Alternately, lifting and blending might not be necessary if there is enough water and paint on the paper. Add the color to each section separately, concentrating on the outside part of each rib and the bottom of the pumpkin.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-5\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Rinse your brush and wipe the excess water on a paper towel.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-6\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Then go back into the color that you just added and in small areas where the colors meet, lift the paint off  just a little but and blend the colors together at the same time.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-7\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Repeat the lifting the blending until you are happy with the effect.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-8\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Mix together burnt Sienna brown with cadmium red and paint into each section. Add this color mostly toward the bottom and up the edges just a little bit.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-9\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">This color is beginning to sculpt out the shadows. Rinse the brush and lift and blend the edges of the color just a bit.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-10\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Mix burnt umber brown with black and add just around the bottom part of the pumpkin and on the outside edge of each rib.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-1-11\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">If you\u2019d like you can lift and blend with your brush. Alternately, lifting and blending might not be necessary if there is enough water and paint on the paper. It may blend together on its own as it dries.<\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-group\"><h4 class=\"wprm-recipe-group-name wprm-recipe-instruction-group-name wprm-block-text-bold\">Paint the Stem and Leaves<\/h4><ul class=\"wprm-recipe-instructions\"><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-2-0\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Mix viridian green, cadmium yellow and black and paint only the center part of the stem.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-2-1\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Then, add a bit more water to your brush to lighten he value and paint in several roughly circle-shaped leaves. If you like, paint in a vine that connects the leaves as well.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-2-2\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Add a little bit more black to the green mixture and then paint in the right side of the stem. Use the same dark green to paint a bit of shadow on the back side of each leaf.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-2-3\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Rinse your brush and then use a little bit of the yellow mixture the paint a highlight toward the front of each leaf.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-2-4\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Paint the right side of the stem with the yellow mixture and gently blend it together with the green.<\/div><\/li><li id=\"wprm-recipe-651-step-2-5\" class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\" style=\"list-style-type: decimal;\"><div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\" style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\">Lastly, use very, very watered down black paint to add a shadow below the pumpkin.
